The competition between OLED and LED display

New technology take the place of old technology is the market discipline, when the LED display products are taking market from other display products, some new display technologies are also trying to occupy the original LED display market, among these product, the OLED display is the hottest product to pay attention because it is said to be the one to lead the revolution in display industry.


At present there are more than 100 research units and enterprises are in the R&D and production of OLED products, such as Samsung, LG, Philip, SONY and other companies. Overall speaking, the OLED industrialization has already begun now, then is the OLED really a threat to LED display market? Below are the comparisons between LED display and OLED display technologies:


As we know, LED and OLED have the same luminous principle so they have some same characteristics, but due to the different raw material, construction and production process, they have more difference:


OLED adopts sandwich structure, it’s composed of multi-layer metal and molecular compounds just as the PCB does, so it’s easy to be used to make high resolution screens, if it adopts soft material it can be used for making foldable curtain display screen. However, because it doesn’t has reflector cup on each lighting spot,it has worse brightness and color effect and higher power consumption than LED display. At the same, the combination reaction happened during OLED lighting process will reduce its brightness as time goes by, this results shorter lifespan than LED display. But because OLED display doesn’t need background light and it has high contrast ratio, slim thickness, wide view angle, quick response time, suitable for curved panel, has large working temperature range and simple production process and other advantages, it is considered to be the next generation of emerging application of flat panel display technology.

Though OLED display has so many advantages but it can’t cover the LED display features at present. LED has stable structure, the luminescent devices are single pixel encapsulation, usually factories will produce thin semiconductor layers on the substrate layers then cut into thousands of tube cores and then inset the tube core in a reflector cup to make a single pixel cell. Along with the technology developing, the smallest pixel pitch for led screen can be 1mm. Because of the stable structure, modularized design and high energy efficiency LED display can extend its applications easily to big size screen and even supper size screen (more than 100sqm). Besides, because the luminescent devices on LED display are packed away from outside environment, it has very long lifespan and the performance remains the same in a long period. All the advantages make the LED display pretty good for big size screen applications in all over the world.  


The OLED will have big market in splicing display market in the future but right now due to its obvious splicing seam, it can’t be acceptable in professional indoor display applications. The threat from OLED display to LED display is coming when the big splicing screen applications has been widened in the future.
