Who is the LED inventor? And what did he do
when he was young. LED is abbreviation of light-emitting diode. It was invented
by Nick Holonyak Jr in 1962. He was an ordinary researcher of General Electric Company,GE. At that
time he considered that it can emit different wave length light and incandescent
lamp would be replaced.
Nick Holonyak Jr got his electric
engineering PHD at Urbana Champaign and became one of researcher of Bell
Telephone Laboratory, which is the most important research institute. You can’t
imagine he was only 26. What a smart guy. He joined American army in 1954 and
entered GE in 1957. He worked at GE until 1963. He also invented the first red
light semiconductor laser device. He left GE after invented LED and become John
Bardeen Endowed Chair Emeritus in Electrical and Computer Engineering and
Physics at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He got many award. Such
as National Academy of Sciences, Global Energy International Prize, National Medal
of Technology, Lemelson-MIT Prize etc.
Some people called LED as longevity light,
meaning never extinguished light. LED light can save more energy than common
bulb. Now he still studying LED technology.
