The relationship between led display high brightness and high energy saving

More and more industrial insiders are getting good knowledge about how a led display can save energy, i.e, embarked on the best balance point of high brightness led lamp, IC driver, power supply switch, product power consumption design, intelligent system design and structure energy saving design, the led display can get the best energy saving effect.

But due to unknown reason, the high energy saving concept is being obfuscated and even replaced by “high brightness”. Everybody think with a certain cost, the display which has higher brightness is the one which is more energy saving, and that’s their standard to evaluate the display cost performance.

In fact, the excessive pursuit of high brightness is deviating the purpose of energy saving, below are the explanation of the potential relationship between high brightness and high energy saving.
At present most of the high brightness led display with brightness more than 12000 cd/sqm are using big pixel pitch led chips, and the big pixel pitch chips are accepted as the market mainstream by most of the led display manufacturers. We know that the brightness of the led display is proportional with the led drive current. 12000 cd/sqm will increase the drive current for the led lamp but because of the physical properties of the led lamps, high brightness of the led lamps will enhance the attenuation and reduce the performance stability. The situation will decrease the lifespan of the led display and affect the display effect if working for long.

Take the p16mm led display as an example, there are evidences show that the 12000 cd/sqm will decrease to 8000 cd/sqm within 1.5-2 years, and the attenuation rate will increase very fast after two years. But at that time, most of the contracts are out of warranty, clients have to take the loss.There is not good cost performance in long term for the high brightness led display. What’s more, the drive current for the display keeps the same, it will redouble the brightness attenuation rate, this fact will make the display can’t meet the requirements of use for a long term. 

To avoid light pollution, the led display has different brightness standard for day time and night time. We know that the reduce of brightness will lose the gray scale, the more brightness changing the more lose on gray scale. Let’s say the led display initial brightness for day time is 12000 cd/sqm and it should be reduced to 800 cd/sqm for night time, if we don’t want to extremely lose gray scale to get very pool image quality in night time, we can’t adjust the screen brightness to fit for night standard, it will cause heavy light pollution. 

In a word, the excessive pursuit of high brightness doesn’t mean the improvement of led display production technology but a result of losing the display lifespan to exchange high power consumption and high brightness.
