According to statistics, there are 50 million discarded lithium-ion notebook battery in the world, which is a major threat for the ecological environments. But IBM researchers recently find a way to use these cells: they found many discarded laptop batteries which still contains the available battery cells, and it can be used for home lighting power supply.

The researchers found that 70 percent of waste laptop battery is sufficient to power the LED lights. They detach the batteries, remove the battery core which is still usable, then use some additional battery cells to make a complete battery. If the power supply four hours a day for the LED light, these battery can provide a one-year service life.

In early tests, the researchers provied this battery to five residents of Bangalore, India, which used in the slums or sidewalk street lighting. The test was very successful, and the upgraded version of the battery is also already begun to accept testing.
